PUNJABI HISTORY Migration through local records Teacher guide A reading-circle or classroom pack using city profiles, planning records, family histories and language-programme descriptions from Punjabi diaspora articles. Suggested group: Older secondary learners and adult reading circles Session: approximately 50 minutes Goal: Compare dated local records without treating an institution, municipal boundary or family experience as a complete account of a community. Preparation: Assign different pairs one Canadian and one Californian article. Use the supplied records rather than asking learners to disclose personal or family migration experiences. A map may help locate the cities, but no new population estimates are needed. READINGS Punjabi Surrey: city records, shared stories and school learning https://punjabihistory.com/diaspora/punjabi-communities-in-surrey-british-columbia/ Article ID: PH-DIA-0016 Punjabi Edmonton: a family park, changing premises and jazz https://punjabihistory.com/diaspora/punjabi-communities-in-edmonton/ Article ID: PH-DIA-0022 Punjabi Winnipeg: institutional space, bilingual classes and public history https://punjabihistory.com/diaspora/punjabi-communities-in-winnipeg/ Article ID: PH-DIA-0023 Punjabi Fresno: shared meals, young oral historians and language campaigns https://punjabihistory.com/diaspora/punjabi-communities-in-fresno/ Article ID: PH-DIA-0027 Punjabi Sacramento: regional faith institutions and university language study https://punjabihistory.com/diaspora/punjabi-communities-in-sacramento/ Article ID: PH-DIA-0028 ACTIVITIES 1. Put a boundary around the claim (12 minutes) Compare Surrey’s city-profile discussion with Sacramento’s regional institutions. For one claim from each, record its date, place, geographical scale and source type. Write a replacement sentence for any summary that says only ‘the Punjabi community’ without specifying its evidence. Find the evidence: Punjabi Surrey: city records, shared stories and school learning — A city within a larger region https://punjabihistory.com/diaspora/punjabi-communities-in-surrey-british-columbia/#a-city-within-a-larger-region Punjabi Sacramento: regional faith institutions and university language study — A gurdwara develops in a separate municipality https://punjabihistory.com/diaspora/punjabi-communities-in-sacramento/#a-gurdwara-develops-in-a-separate-municipality Guidance for discussion: Expect the learner to name the municipality or wider region and keep dated records attached to their period. Check whether a population category, an institution and a language programme have been treated as different kinds of evidence. Do not require a single overall population total. 2. Proposal, programme or completed outcome? (15 minutes) Find the planning record in the Winnipeg article and the education records in the Fresno article. Label what each document establishes at its own date. List the follow-up record you would seek before claiming that a building was completed, a class ran or a campaign caused an outcome. Find the evidence: Punjabi Winnipeg: institutional space, bilingual classes and public history — Building histories leave traces in planning files https://punjabihistory.com/diaspora/punjabi-communities-in-winnipeg/#building-histories-leave-traces-in-planning-files Punjabi Fresno: shared meals, young oral historians and language campaigns — Campaigning and course requests leave different records https://punjabihistory.com/diaspora/punjabi-communities-in-fresno/#campaigning-and-course-requests-leave-different-records Guidance for discussion: An acceptable answer separates a request or proposal from evidence of implementation. It also avoids connecting documents from different schools or years through an unsupported causal statement. The proposed follow-up should fit the question, such as a completion record or a dated course schedule. 3. Whose experience is visible? (13 minutes) Read the Edmonton family-park and music sections. Draft a small exhibition label using one named individual or family. State the source and avoid suggesting that this experience represents every Punjabi resident. Add a separate research question about a voice missing from your selection. Find the evidence: Punjabi Edmonton: a family park, changing premises and jazz — A park remembers a particular family https://punjabihistory.com/diaspora/punjabi-communities-in-edmonton/#a-park-remembers-a-particular-family Punjabi Edmonton: a family park, changing premises and jazz — Judi Singh belongs to the city’s music history https://punjabihistory.com/diaspora/punjabi-communities-in-edmonton/#judi-singh-belongs-to-the-city-s-music-history Guidance for discussion: Look for a named subject, a dated or identifiable source, and careful separation of a commemorative place from a former residence. Assess the evidence and wording, rather than how closely the learner’s label follows the article’s phrasing. REFLECTION How did the type of surviving record shape the story you could tell about a city? Support your answer with two different records. EXTENSION Prepare an archive request for one follow-up question. Name the document you hope to find, the date range and the repository or institution most likely to hold it. Do not send the request as part of this exercise. This is an English guided-reading resource. Timing is a suggestion; adapt the reading load. Article citations and limitations remain part of the activity. This pack does not certify attainment or imply external curriculum approval.
