Behind the reading room

Accessibility.

Reading options, keyboard access, map alternatives and the accessibility limits of this edition.

Reading and navigation

Article text and bibliographies are delivered as HTML and remain readable with JavaScript disabled. Section indexes offer a browsing alternative to search. The skip link moves to the main content.

Use Tab and Shift+Tab to move between links and controls. Menus use native disclosure controls. Escape closes an open navigation menu. Visible focus styles identify the active control, and reduced-motion preferences are respected.

Alternatives to interactive views

The atlas has an equivalent linked list with coordinates, scope and source references. The timeline uses ordinary linked HTML records. Knowledge checks use labelled radio controls and text feedback.

Print styles retain article text and citations. Browser zoom and text enlargement can be used without changing the article record.

Scope of verification

The site aims for WCAG 2.2 AA. Responsive and automated checks are recorded in the build handoff. A complete assistive-technology audit has not been completed; this statement is not a certification.

If something prevents access, prepare a note with the URL, device, browser and the action you were trying to complete.

History grows clearer when we can check it.

How we use sources, explain uncertainty and correct mistakes.
