Behind the reading room

Terms of use.

Practical terms for using the reading room and the rights attached to linked and reproduced material.

Use the sources

The reading room provides educational reference material. An entry is a starting point for research; its evidence notes and source limitations are part of the entry. Verify material against the cited records when accuracy matters for your own work.

Rights vary by material

Each reproduced photograph has its own creator, source record and licence on the image credits page. Those licences do not automatically apply to another photograph, archive scan or linked document.

Linking to an external record does not grant permission to reproduce it. A source may be accessible online while quotation, download or publication rights remain restricted. No institutional endorsement is implied by a citation.

Corrections and availability

The edition can change as evidence is checked and corrections are made. Source sites may move or restrict material. Use the article ID and a precise source locator when reporting an issue.
