Specific objects

The museum’s Refugee Artefacts page identifies a ration card received by Tirath Ram Datta at Feroz Shah Kotla camp and donated by Yash Vir Datta. Its description connects the family’s move from Sialkot to Delhi. This is a named object history supplied by the museum, not a complete refugee register.[1]

Distinguish an object from a photograph

The museum’s separate Archival Material page illustrates another kind of evidence. It includes a caption describing a family inside Kingsway Refugee Camp and credits images to TAACHT Archives. That caption identifies a setting and a supplying archive. It does not provide a named photographer, exposure date or item number in the accompanying text. A research note should preserve the stated caption and credit while leaving those other fields unresolved. A view of one family cannot establish the conditions experienced by every camp resident.[2]

The same page includes material about artist Chittaprosad and the Bengal famine. This wider curatorial context matters when searching for Punjab objects: being displayed on a Partition Museum page does not mean that an image was made in Punjab or during the 1947 migration. Keep the geography, event and medium attached to the particular description. Do not assign a museum photograph to the Datta family merely because both records concern refugee camps.[2]

Make the record traceable

Collections Trust’s Spectrum guidance provides a useful method for the next step. Its cataloguing standard links an object with a unique accession number and cross-references related documentation. It also asks that contributions be attributed and changes recorded transparently. Applied to these public museum pages, this suggests keeping separate fields for the object or image, the published description, the donor or credit, and any later interpretation. The web page is a starting reference; it is not an accession number.[3]

When requesting further information, identify the published title and page, then ask for the object reference, fuller provenance and any reproduction conditions. Record the reply as an additional source rather than silently rewriting the original caption. This is our practical use of Spectrum’s traceability principles, not a claim about the museum’s internal database or accreditation.[3]
