Identify the translation rather than citing only the scripture’s title

CiNii Books records Gurbachan Singh Talib’s Sri Guru Granth Sahib in English Translation as produced in consultation with Bhai Jodh Singh and issued by Punjabi University’s Publication Bureau in Patiala. The record identifies a first edition beginning in 1984 and lists volumes held by several Japanese university libraries. This is a specific English translation, with its own publication history, rather than the name of every English rendering or every physical copy of the scripture.[1]

Its volume notes distinguish material ending with Raga Gauri from the following volume’s Raga Asa to Raga Telang range. Such information helps locate a passage within this edition. Keep translator, volume and page when making a research note, and retain the original passage reference where available. A union catalogue supplies edition and holding information; it does not establish that another translation has identical wording, volume divisions or page numbers.[1]

Manuscript access involves care and consultation

Conservator Solange Masher’s 2020 account of Manchester’s Punjabi MS 5 explains why the library’s responsibilities extend beyond ordinary book storage. The Guru Granth Sahib is revered by Sikhs as the living Guru. She describes advice from Sikh communities and specialists about how the manuscript should rest and be approached, and records restricted reader access at that time. These are institutional conservation decisions in a particular setting, rather than universal instructions for every reader or gurdwara.[2]

Distinguish a dated condition report from later digital access

Masher also describes handmade paper, a red-leather binding and structural features that required careful assessment before handling or display. A staff comment added in May 2022 states that the manuscript had since been digitised; a 2024 comment supplies an updated access link. The dates matter. Online images offer a route to study while the conservator’s earlier description remains a historical account of physical care. Arrange any consultation through the holding institution’s current procedures instead of assuming a past blog post grants handling permission.[2]
