The University of Illinois holds an undated Map of the Southern Punjab Railway, credited to Whitehead Morris Ltd., London. The actual enlarged sheet identifies the railway in red and prints a scale of one inch to sixteen miles, also expressed as 1:1,013,760. Its catalogue instead gives 1:1,500,000 and labels the language German, although the inspected title and scale are in English. Record those discrepancies rather than silently combining incompatible fields. The inset locates the network within India, while a separate table lists sections and distances. The collection label World War I Maps is not a verified publication date for this sheet. No date has been established here from its imprint.[1]

Distinguish operating and unfinished lines

A British Library description provides a dated comparison: IOR/X/12151 concerns railways open and under construction on 31 March 1917. The record says the map differentiates gauges and gives a main scale of one inch to sixty-four miles, with larger-scale inset maps. A railway line in such a source therefore requires both a status and a gauge, not simply a coloured trace. This guide inspected the catalogue, not that original sheet. Its reverse is described separately as an October 1917 India Office Roll of Honour. Cite the relevant side and date; the two sides answer different historical questions.[2]
