Start with the record-creating office
Punjab State Archives research begins with the office that created a record. In their 2014 study, librarians Pardeep Rattan and Rupinder Singh distinguish records of eight former princely states at Patiala from Punjab records held at Chandigarh. The states they name are Patiala, Kapurthala, Nabha, Jind, Faridkot, Malerkotla, Kalsian and Nalagarh. This is a dated description of archival distribution. It helps frame an enquiry about a state and department rather than assuming that every Punjab record is in one repository.[1]
Distinguish a holdings report from a scan
The study discusses manuscripts, maps, books and other records, as well as digitisation then under way. It separates State Archives activity from the Languages Department’s manuscript project in Patiala. Those are different institutional collections. A statement that manuscripts were digitised in one department should not be transferred to the other. Nor does a reported scanning target establish that an entire record series is presently available online. Retain the institution, series, document date and available reference before requesting a particular file.[1]
Locate historical research rules
Guru Nanak Dev University Library’s rare-book catalogue supplies a precise bibliographic lead: P298R, entry 6958, for Rules regulating historical research among the records in the custody of the Archives Department and access of the public thereto. It identifies the Patiala and East Panjab States Union Department of Archives, a Patiala printing by B.S. Press in 1952, twenty pages and Patiala Archives Publication number 2. This identifies a historical publication; its text was not examined here. It cannot establish the regulations applicable to a visit today.[2]
Prepare a specific current enquiry
Tapinder Singh’s September 2024 account describes Urdu, English, Persian and Punjabi records and ongoing digitisation at Patiala. Treat it as contemporary reporting, not a complete finding aid. Prepare an enquiry with the former state, relevant office, approximate years and research question. Confirm the current location, consultation conditions and any copying arrangements with the repository before travel. The records discussed in these sources are research leads; no requested file or current reader registration was verified for this guide.[3]
