A probable origin and a later gift
Asian Art Museum helmet 1998.69 is dated 1820–1840 and assigned probably to Lahore. Its materials are iron, gold and brass, and its credit line records a gift from the Kapany Collection. The probable place field and the later gift answer different questions: one concerns attributed origin, the other an acquisition route. Neither names the original wearer or proves ownership by Ranjit Singh. The museum’s description relates the helmet’s shape to a warrior’s topknot and describes patterned links in its neck guard. Those observations identify features of an object; a complete chain of custody would require further records linking its successive owners.[1]
A reported taking
The Baggage and Belonging catalogue identifies sword MNERM 874 in the Queen’s Own Royal West Kent Regiment Collection as Indian in origin. It reports that Colour Sergeant Wellington White of the 50th Regiment took it during the 1845–6 Sutlej Campaign. Its description records a curved steel blade and a wooden scabbard with silver mounts. This is an attributed taking, distinct from a later museum acquisition. The catalogue does not recover the sword’s earlier maker or owner.[2]
Following acquisition files
The V&A explains why provenance research needs several kinds of administrative record. Its Central Inventory often supplies little beyond an acquisition description and the dealer or collector’s name. Departmental Registers can add price, condition, address, earlier ownership or references. They may point to Registered Papers, kept in Nominal Files with correspondence about a collector or dealer. Such linked documentation can extend the history recorded on a public object page. It remains a research route rather than proof that a relevant letter survives for every weapon. Record which document was actually consulted and which earlier transfer is still unestablished before joining a probable origin to a modern gift.[3]
