Two manuscript names identify different witnesses

Punjabi University’s reference entry distinguishes the Colebrooke, or Valaitvali, manuscript from the Hafizabad manuscript associated with Macauliffe. The former came from the Colebrooke collection in London; Gurmukh Singh of Oriental College, Lahore, brought the latter to Macauliffe’s attention. Macauliffe’s 1885 publication separated the continuous writing into words. These names identify particular histories of discovery and editing, rather than interchangeable labels for a single surviving physical book.[1]

The entry explicitly says that the Colebrooke witness carries no date and considers a proposed reference to 1635 insufficient for a secure conclusion. Its later discussion distinguishes manuscript branches and variant readings. Record the witness and the source of any proposed date when taking notes. The adjective Puratan should not be allowed to supply a precise year that the particular manuscript itself does not establish.[1]

An edited composite is a further stage

The university’s digital-project introduction describes Puratan Janam Sakhi as commonly referring to Bhai Vir Singh’s composite work, first published in 1926. This distinction is useful when moving from a catalogue to a modern reading text: an editor can bring readings together from more than one witness. The displayed text belongs to an editorial history, even when it preserves much older narratives about Guru Nanak.[2]

Script conversion does not create another manuscript

The project makes the text available in Gurmukhi and Shahmukhi and describes page-by-page conversion using the centre’s Sangam software. It names a development team including project leader Gurpreet Singh Lehal, an Urdu expert, a proofreader and data-entry staff. This is a documented route across scripts for readers and researchers. Changing script does not translate the text into English or establish that the digital output is a separately discovered manuscript. In a citation, retain the edited-text identity, the script consulted and the digital project, rather than citing the interface simply as an ancient original.[2]
