Education at Phagwara

Phagwara’s Ramgarhia College of Education places its history within the Ramgarhia Educational Council’s wider work. Its account explicitly describes cooperation by community members and traces the educational institutions to a primary school in 1929. The teacher-training college opened on 24 September 1956 with two Bachelor of Teaching units and was formerly called Ramgarhia Training College. Its institutional list ranges across general schooling, girls’ education, industrial training and engineering. It dates a polytechnic college to 1950. This institutional sequence connected community organisation with general schooling, teacher preparation and technical education. The college’s history connects collective organisation and management with the creation of places for formal learning. Those stated purposes concern the council’s institutions; they do not establish the community identity of every pupil or employee, or prove that all Ramgarhia families followed the same educational path.[1]

Girls’ higher education in Ludhiana

A separate Ludhiana institution provides another trajectory. Ramgarhia Girls College’s profile connects its foundation with Guru Nanak’s 500th birth anniversary and the formation of Ramgarhia Educational Council, Ludhiana. It describes a need for nearby girls’ higher education in Miller Ganj around 1969 and an initial B.A. programme. Its dated list records commerce and language honours in 1985, postgraduate vocal music in 1991 and computer science as a B.A. elective in 1999. These changes show the college broadening its curriculum across arts, professional subjects and technology. Its financial-support account also describes contributions from management, donors and social organisations. This is the college’s institutional history; the similarly named Phagwara council should remain a distinct organisation.[2]

A short Leeds comparison

Ramgarhia Board Leeds records a different institutional setting: a hall purchased in 1966 to meet social and cultural needs. Its timeline also describes the formation of a national Ramgarhia council in 1976. Migration and new local needs produced further forms of organisation.[3]
