Descending through compartments

A baoli makes the descent toward water part of the building. A 2025 study describes Bahar Wali at Kharian through a vaulted entrance, flanking domed pavilions, stone steps and compartments leading toward a circular shaft. Its entrance is capped by a central dome. Its researchers reported finding the structure dry and counting four compartments, while acknowledging different counts in earlier descriptions. One of their eastern-wall photographs is dated November 2024. These recorded features offer a bounded account of access and form; the paper’s inconsistent construction dates do not provide a secure chronology.[1]

An intervention recorded for 1930–31

The Archaeological Survey of India’s 1936 compilation describes a structure labelled “Aurangzeb’s Baoli at Kharian”. It records a collapse that endangered nearby buildings. Officials filled its stepped portion while retaining the well at the bottom, describing the retaining walls as largely brick in mud. The report also says the monument was removed from the protected list at that time. Its judgement of the structure’s value belongs to the officials who wrote it, rather than settling its significance today.[2]

A separate Gujrat entry describes pumping water down so workmen could repair brickwork beside neighbouring houses. Both entries connect archaeological intervention with occupied surroundings, and show that preserving a well did not necessarily preserve every route into it.[2]

Whether the Kharian structure in this report is the one described in the later study remains unestablished.[1][2]

A gathering at Goindwal

The baoli name also belongs to a living institution at Goindwal. An SGPC centenary report describes a visit to Gurdwara Sri Baoli Sahib, including the governor paying reverence and visiting its langar house. It documents a congregational setting associated with the name. It does not describe the well’s water service or supply an architectural survey of its steps.[3]
