Regional distribution and repertoire
Peter Manuel’s introduction to the ARChive of Contemporary Music’s 2013 cassette gallery discusses North Indian releases from around 1990. He links expanding cassette production with recordings for regional languages and varied audiences. Its examples include ballads, devotional material and folk music, placing Punjabi circulation within a wider recording economy. The examples also include ribald compilations.[1]
The shop as a recording place
Amarjot Kaur’s 2017 Tribune report visits Chandigarh music retailers during a period of declining cassette business. Raj Kumar Garg recalls charging customers to record individual songs, with the price depending on the performer, availability and language. Anil Gupta describes wholesale tapes from several labels and a stock that included Punjabi singers alongside film music. Their accounts make the shop a place where customers selected and obtained music as well as bought packaged albums. Other interviewees describe movement towards CDs and pen drives, or the addition of unrelated goods and services to sustain a business. The report captures different responses within one city: some shops had stopped selling cassettes, while others retained small stocks or occasional buyers. At Deepak Radios, Arun Kumar reported a small continuing trade: older buyers asked for religious cassettes, while younger customers sought old songs. These are dated retailer memories and observations, rather than a single date on which cassette use ended across Punjab.[2]
A cassette with production credits
SADAA’s catalogue preserves an example: the sleeve for Gurmail Singh’s Bhangra Milestone, released by Keda Records in 1995. Its entry records an English and Punjabi track listing and credits Kuljit Bhamra with keyboards and percussion. The object belongs to the Kuljit Bhamra Collection under reference KB/KEDA/STU/3. These production and catalogue details connect a Punjabi recording with a British studio and archive history, adding a material counterpart to the retailers’ accounts.[3]
