Poet, singer and metrical narration
Ajmer Singh’s reference entry describes kavishari as metrical poetry and unaccompanied singing associated with Malwa. Its repertoire is wider than battle: qissas, religious and mythological narratives, local episodes, customs and relationships all appear in his account. Meter and a voice addressing listeners connect these varied subjects. The category therefore concerns how poetry is made and presented as well as what a particular narrative describes.[1]
The entry distinguishes three roles: a writer who does not perform, someone who composes and sings, and a singer presenting an instructor’s or another writer’s work. These roles prevent the performed version from being assumed to be the singer’s own composition. Ajmer Singh also describes alterations through repeated delivery: performers can add or reduce material, gradually changing the character of a composition. The written text and the version familiar to an audience need not remain identical.[1]
A verse form crossing ensembles
Hardial Thuhi describes kali moving from unaccompanied kavishar delivery into dhadi performance with dhadd and sarangi. A shared verse form can thus circulate between practices whose instrumental arrangements and delivery remain distinguishable.[2]
College and commemorative settings
Khalsa College Amritsar’s 2024–25 prospectus reports that its Kawishri team took first place in an intercollege competition organised with Joga Singh Jogi Memorial Trust on 9 November 2023. The college’s own record documents a student team and a memorial organisation participating in the form’s public presentation.[3]
A separate SGPC announcement of 26 August 2023 planned kavishar jathas alongside discourse, hymn singing and dhadi for Jaito Morcha centenary events. It scheduled a congregation at Gurdwara Sri Gangsar Sahib, Jaito, on 14 September 2023 and proposed student competitions including kavishri. In this programme, group performance would share Gurbani and history with listeners, while the competitions would give students another way to participate in the commemoration.[4]
