Songs within a sitting

Shabad kirtan is devotional singing of Sikh scriptural compositions. Inderjit N. Kaur’s 2011 study describes it within gurdwara worship, life ceremonies and recorded listening. She distinguishes the early-morning Asa ki Var sitting from more flexible programmes: verses are interspersed with other shabads, and the drum player has a prescribed solo chanting role within her account. Family occasions can bring requests for compositions meaningful to those attending. A sitting thus involves choices about sequence, occasion and participation, as well as the sound of an individual song.[1]

Learning a presentation

Punjabi University’s 2020–2023 B.A. syllabus makes presentation an assessed skill. Candidates prepare shabad compositions in five prescribed rags, portions of Asa di Var and Anand Sahib in Ramkali, alongside rhythmic demonstrations. Its practical instructions allow harmonium accompaniment while giving preference to string instruments, and require performance without reading the text. These requirements show how one course connects remembered text, musical preparation and delivery. They belong to that examination’s design.[2]

Teachers and students on tour

Eternal University’s Music Department reports that teachers and students performed shabad kirtan and dhadi vaaran at gurdwaras across Punjab between 24 September and 16 October 2025. The university, based at Baru Sahib in Himachal Pradesh, describes the tour as an educational and devotional initiative guided by teachers. Its report places students in congregational settings beyond their campus. It groups the two performance practices within a shared programme without making their musical forms identical, and supplies dates rather than a detailed itinerary of each stop.[3]

Basant in Ludhiana

A Punjabi Tribune report of 28 February 2026 documents a more specific gathering at Gurdwara Guru Singh Sabha, Model Town Extension, Ludhiana. The Sikh School of Music and the gurdwara committee organised a Basant rag kirtan darbar using string instruments. Its credits include established performers, student jathas and the ensembles of Gursimran Kaur, Kirpa Kaur and Harmanpreet Kaur. This local example brings seasonal rag choice, teaching and public performance together. The report records a named event and its participants, providing a closer view than a general claim about every gurdwara’s programme.[4]
