An Oxford congregation and its remembered beginnings
Cowley Road Methodist Church’s own account dates its Punjabi congregation to the late 1960s. It associates the beginning with Das Gill, then based at RAF Abingdon, and identifies his son Afzal Gill with its later oversight. Its historical description of worship was bilingual: a short sermon was usually delivered in English and translated into Punjabi. Tea after services and meals on special occasions appeared alongside preaching and music in its account of congregational life. This is a church’s account of a particular congregation, rather than a census of Punjabi Christians in Britain.[1]
The same account remembers joint Sunday schooling for children from Punjabi and English congregations. It also describes worshippers subsequently forming congregations in denominations with which they were more familiar. That recollection makes denominational diversity part of the story; Punjabi language did not require everyone to belong to one church organisation.[1]
A Wesley heritage project dates the introduction of weekly Punjabi worship at Cowley Road to 1967. It records that the church ceased Methodist worship in 2025 and that the Punjabi congregation moved to Kidlington Methodist Church.[4]
Punjabi services within a multilingual Singapore parish
The Diocese of Singapore traces Parish of Christ Church to the Tamil congregation of St Peter’s Church at Stamford Road in 1941. Its institutional profile describes a Tamil parish that also provides Punjabi, English and Malayalam services. The profile links the parish to chaplaincy at St Andrew’s Migrant Worker Medical Centre. It separately presents free weekday lunches in Little India as an initiative for which partners were being sought. The distinction matters: a stated hope for a programme is different evidence from a report of meals already distributed.[2]
A dated record of a congregation in Kidlington
University College, Oxford’s Hilary Term 2026 programme identifies Miriam Moul as the minister of a Punjabi-language congregation based in Kidlington, alongside responsibilities at Wesley Memorial Methodist Church and the university. The programme announced her preaching on 15 February. This dated institutional record places Punjabi worship within a wider circuit of local and university ministry, without establishing when the congregation moved or measuring its membership.[3]
