Railway work and a Sentul institution
A published history of Gurdwara Sahib Central Workshops Sentul connects the institution with Sikh employees of the Central Railway Workshops. The inspected excerpt, credited to Saran Singh Sidhu, describes a temple reserve in 1912 and a wooden building later replaced by a brick-and-concrete structure in 1932. Its occupational setting gives this local history a different emphasis from a general account of migration to Malaysia.[1]
The same account connects the gurdwara with Punjabi schooling, a library and accommodation for students within the later Sikh Centre Malaysia. These facilities place education and residence alongside worship and shared meals. They are described in a historical excerpt covering developments into the early 2000s, rather than a verified inventory of today’s services or a measure of every Punjabi resident’s institutional involvement.[1]
Local food in the community kitchen
Joey Belmondo’s 2025 master’s thesis provides a more recent, closely observed view of community cooking. Its five-week Kuala Lumpur fieldwork used participation, conversations and interviews in gurdwaras, workplaces and markets. In the Sentul kitchen, the researcher describes Harbans Singh preparing nasi lemak for a gathering, with coconut rice and a vegetarian sambal. The account makes a specific volunteer’s work visible.[2]
The cook explained that Chinese and Malay dishes had joined Punjabi food in the kitchen to encourage people to come. This is a participant’s explanation recorded within an ethnography, rather than a universal account of Sikh menus or motives. The example shows local culinary adaptation within one shared meal setting. Observations from Petaling Jaya elsewhere in the thesis should not be silently relocated into Kuala Lumpur city.[2]
An announcement and its limits
A 14 April 2016 Asia Samachar report records a public-funding announcement at the Sentul gurdwara. Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced a RM 400,000 federal allocation for renovation and upgrading during a breakfast gathering attended by gurdwara and Malaysian Gurdwaras Council representatives. This is a dated interaction between a particular institution and public office, rather than a general promise to every Punjabi organisation.[3]
An allocation announcement records one stage of a building project. This report does not document later payments or completed works. Its focus is a gathering and an announced project; further financial and construction records would be needed to trace the renovation itself. The report nevertheless documents an identifiable moment of contact between the institution and public representatives.[3]
