Recognition in Richmond Hill

A January 2023 report prepared for New York City’s Districting Commission describes Richmond Hill as a place where different communities of interest overlap. Its discussion identifies Sikh congregations, including the Sikh Cultural Society, as local anchors and records the name Little Punjab for part of the neighbourhood. This is a description of community connections, rather than a boundary enclosing everyone who identifies as Punjabi.[1]

Street naming made some of those connections visible. The report records the 2021 recognition of Punjab Way along a stretch of 101st Avenue and Gurdwara Street along part of 97th Avenue. It also discusses Little Guyana Avenue nearby. Read together, these names document several histories sharing an urban landscape; none makes religious identity, language and national origin interchangeable.[1]

Punjabi in a labour archive

A different kind of connection appears in a letter dated 8 March 1998, preserved in the New York Taxi Workers Alliance records at New York University. SAADA’s catalogue describes it as announcing the alliance’s formation from the Lease Driver Coalition. The digital item contains four images and is catalogued in English, Punjabi and Urdu, documenting multilingual communication around workplace organising.[2]

Its archival location is precise: WAG 319, Box 1, Folder 7, in the Tamiment Library and Robert F. Wagner Labor Archives. That provenance lets readers distinguish an identifiable organising document from a general account of taxi work. The catalogue establishes the letter’s languages and purpose; it supplies no basis for describing every alliance member, taxi driver or South Asian worker as Punjabi.[2]

School information for families

Richmond Hill High School supplies a more recent example of Punjabi in everyday public communication. Its English as a New Language department describes the Lions ENL Express, a newsletter begun in spring 2020 for students and parents. The school says fluent teachers help translate it into Punjabi and Spanish, placing language access within ordinary communication about schooling.[3]

The department describes stand-alone and jointly taught classes supporting English reading, writing, speaking and listening. Pupils are placed using the state’s language assessments, across levels from Entering to Commanding. Punjabi translation serves a different practical purpose: keeping households informed while students participate in this English-language learning programme.[3]
