An institution’s beginning differs from its dedication
Stockton Gurdwara’s history begins with a meeting in Holt, California, in 1911, where Sikhs from across the state agreed to establish a religious centre. Land was purchased in South Stockton in 1912. The society describes religious, social, political and educational purposes. This sequence connects organisation with property and construction, while keeping the meeting’s location distinct from the eventual site. Neither the land purchase nor the initial decision should be substituted for a building’s later dedication.[1]
The University of the Pacific preserves a catalogue record for Van Covert Martin’s photograph of Pacific Coast Khalsa Diwan Society members at dedicatory services on 21 November 1915. Its identifier is P80-138. That dated record provides a more precise reference for the ceremony than an institution’s foundation year alone. It identifies a gathering, without supplying the names or personal backgrounds of every individual pictured.[3]
Educational support reaches beyond Stockton
The society’s scholarship account dates Jawala Singh’s announcement of the Guru Govind Singh Sahib Educational Scholarships to 27 December 1911. They supported students from British India studying at the University of California, Berkeley, with help including tuition and rent. The stated hope was that students would return and improve conditions in India. This joined education to the institution’s wider social ambitions across the Pacific.[4]
Its later page describes re-establishing scholarship support for Sikh higher education, naming academic achievement, seva and community welfare among its purposes. These are published aims, rather than evidence of particular awards or outcomes. Historical student assistance and a later programme show education recurring within the society’s work, alongside the buildings and communal provision documented in the other records.[4]
