Building histories leave traces in planning files
A Winnipeg planning report for the Sikh Society of Manitoba’s Mollard Road premises records a place-of-worship permit in 1984 and an enlargement approved through a 1994 application. It locates the property south of Mollard Road near Pipeline Road, with West St Paul across the road to the north. These precise records locate a congregation within the city’s changing edge, while an address label alone could obscure the municipal boundary.[1]
In 2018 the society sought another addition. Planning staff recommended rejection because of land-use and servicing policies affecting the agricultural-zoned site. The agenda preserves a proposal and an administrative recommendation, not a completed expansion or the hearing’s final decision. Such paperwork adds practical detail to institutional history: establishing and enlarging a meeting place involved property, permits and infrastructure as well as a congregation’s wishes and resources.[1]
Punjabi becomes a language of classroom instruction
École Stanley Knowles School’s August 2026 notice advertised Punjabi bilingual provision for incoming Kindergarten to Grade 4 pupils that September. It stated that prior Punjabi proficiency was not required. Social Studies, Health and other subjects would be taught in the second language, while English Language Arts, Mathematics and Science would remain in English. The published arrangement therefore describes bilingual schooling, rather than teaching every subject through Punjabi.[2]
This gives Punjabi a role as a medium for learning subject matter within the Winnipeg School Division, beyond a separate language lesson or an institution’s weekend classes. The notice asked families applying for the programme to submit registration documents. It establishes an offered educational pathway and its language arrangements, without showing enrolment or later attainment. Pupils’ participation should not be used to infer their nationality, religion or existing home-language skills.[2]
An exhibition revisits earlier connections to the city
A Sikh Century of Service was programmed at Maples Collegiate in April 2026 by Sikh Heritage Manitoba with the Sikh Heritage Museum of Canada and Bhai Kahan Singh Nabha Foundation. The programme proposed using objects, archival records and personal histories to examine Sikh army veterans. It located connections with Winnipeg as early as 1916. This is the organisers’ description of an exhibition, rather than a substitute for inspecting each veteran’s military file.[3]
The announced launch paired a keynote by University of Winnipeg historian Emma Alexander with performances by Amber Trails Community School pupils. Archival interpretation and young people’s participation thus appeared in the same public programme. Together with the planning file and bilingual-school notice, it shows several ways local institutions address space, education and memory. Each record has its own scope; none supplies a complete demographic or religious portrait of Punjabi Winnipeg.[3]
