Recipients and officials
Religious patronage under Ranjit Singh can be examined through particular allocations. Gurpreet Kaur’s doctoral thesis identifies an 1811 village grant to the Brahmin Devi Sahai in Talwandi pargana in the Amritsar area. Her supporting reference is a Foreign/Political Proceedings record dated 1853. The date of that later archival record must be distinguished from the earlier grant it describes; the original file has not been independently inspected here.[1]
Kaur also records an 1816 grant to qazi Fakir Muhammad, citing the Khalsa Darbar Records. Another case concerns Nand Singh, kardar of Amritsar, assigning land to Sukha Nand in 1815. Taken together, these cases distinguish the religious recipient from the official making an assignment. They also show why a history of patronage needs named people and record references rather than a single label for all grants.[1]
Service and institutions
Anne Murphy’s analysis identifies a distinction at Darbar Sahib. Under Ranjit Singh and his successors, grants could go to individual service providers and to institutions within the complex, including the Akal Bunga. She contrasts those arrangements with a later administrative framing of proprietor and community. This is an argument about changing categories of possession and management. It helps explain why a grant to a person, support for a service and ownership of an entire site should be examined separately. The argument supplies historical interpretation, not a ruling on current title.[2]
A gift at Kashi
Kashi’s official portal supplies a different institutional example. Its history credits Ahilyabai Holkar with the temple’s present form in 1780 and dates the gilding of two domes with Ranjit Singh’s donated gold to 1839. That is the portal’s gilding chronology. It distinguishes construction from a later gift and does not independently establish the date when the gold was donated.[3]
