Literary geographies
Anne Murphy’s study of Waris Shah’s eighteenth-century Heer explores attachments to Punjab alongside wider Persianate and vernacular worlds. A poem can make places meaningful through narrative and affiliation without supplying a modern administrative boundary. Her argument cautions against treating the classic as culturally sealed.[1]
Ask whether an author means a cultural landscape, political jurisdiction or network of places. This is our inference from Murphy’s discussion of multiple regional affinities. The answer needs the source’s own context; a contemporary outline cannot simply be imposed on its vocabulary.[1]
An official scope
The 1908 Punjab in the Imperial Gazetteer’s provincial series is catalogued as a two-volume government-printed compilation with maps. That dated administrative context does not define Punjab for every earlier century, or for either country’s present geography. Read its coverage in its own setting.[2]
Later boundaries also require dates. India’s Punjab Reorganisation Act specifies 1 November 1966 as its appointed day and sets out the creation of Haryana, Chandigarh’s union territory and territorial changes involving Himachal Pradesh. Consult the operative sections for the exact geography; the name of the remaining Punjab does not imply that its territory remained unchanged.[3]
Place and period
Pakistan’s Bureau of Statistics separately publishes a Punjab provincial report within its 2023 population and housing census programme. Here Punjab names a provincial statistical unit in Pakistan. It should not be silently combined with the Indian state or with the entire historical region. Any comparison needs consistent dates, units and definitions before numbers are placed side by side.[4]
A practical description therefore states the document’s date, the jurisdiction or cultural setting intended and the modern location only where helpful. When using the 1966 Act, retain its historical territorial terms instead of replacing them with an undated present map. This is our editorial method for keeping change visible; it is not a claim about rightful territorial ownership.[3]
