Several different achievements can become one origin story

Making a version, naming it and bringing it to a wider market are different events. Jason Edwards’ scholarly discussion compares chicken tikka masala with fish and chips as products of adaptation and changing consumption. This does not rule out an individual contribution; it asks which contribution the evidence demonstrates.[2]

Edwards describes the fish-and-chips story as gradual and contingent, connecting its spread with changing supplies, transport, refrigeration and working lives. A story focused on the first shop can compress that wider development into one scene. This is an explicitly comparative British example: it shows why the first recorded combination, its commercial success and its later status as a national dish need separate explanations.[2]

A parliamentary attribution records a campaign

For chicken tikka masala, a primary document preserves a very specific claim. A 2009 early day motion sponsored by Mohammad Sarwar attributed its invention in 1970s Glasgow to Ali Ahmed Aslam of the Shish Mahal restaurant. The motion also supported a campaign for Glasgow origin recognition. It is direct evidence that MPs supported that attribution and campaign; it is not a contemporaneous record of what happened in the restaurant kitchen decades earlier.[1]

The distinction follows from the document’s form and date. A reader should say that the motion made the claim, rather than announce that Parliament established the dish’s inventor as a historical fact. The page records sponsors and later signatories. Those signatures document support for the motion; they do not supply a dated menu, recipe notebook or independent eyewitness account of the proposed first preparation.[1]

Match the conclusion to the dated record

Edwards treats the familiar Glasgow episode as an origin narrative within a broader history of culinary mixing. His comparison encourages a narrower question: is a source documenting a recipe, a restaurant’s promotion or an identity attached to the food? Calling these different developments invention can conceal the contributions of earlier cooks, suppliers and customers. A good account states what remains uncertain without denying that a named cook may have made an important adaptation.[2]

The parliamentary example permits a firm but limited statement: the Glasgow claim was publicly promoted in 2009. Establishing an earlier first creation would require evidence directed to that event. Preserve the claim’s author, date and purpose so a later reader can distinguish a documented campaign from a proven origin.[1]
