Name the place and date
A population number needs a geography and a date. Punjab can refer to a province in Pakistan, a state in India, or a wider historical and cultural region; those boundaries are not interchangeable. The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics reported 127,688,922 people for Pakistan’s Punjab in its 2023 census results. That is a figure for the province in that census, not a count of every Punjabi speaker or person of Punjabi heritage worldwide. When using a number, name the issuing agency, geographic unit and census year, and link to the relevant table or report so readers can verify it.[1]
Avoid mixing census boundaries
India’s 2011 census district handbook for Tarn Taran reports a population of 27,743,338 for the Indian state of Punjab. The figure describes a different administrative area and an earlier census than the Pakistani provincial figure. It should not be labelled simply as the population of all Punjab today. Even when two statistics are both official, readers need to know whether their territories, dates and definitions match before comparing or combining them. If the question concerns a district, language or religious community, seek the appropriate table rather than substituting a state-wide total.[2]
Distinguish a count from an estimate
Population changes after a census date. An estimate may use a census as its starting point and then account for subsequent change; it is not the same thing as a new census count. For example, the UK Office for National Statistics describes its mid-2021 estimates as based on Census 2021 and updated for the period to the mid-year reference point. Its method is an illustration, not a method that can automatically be assumed for Punjab. Label estimates with their reference date and provider, inspect their methodology, and update a page when a newer comparable figure becomes available.[3]
