Evidence record · given name
Meaning and use are separate questions.
Lexical evidence: The dictionary word amrit is associated with nectar or ambrosia; this does not establish an individual bearer’s naming intention.
Documented use: Recorded in the full name Rajkumari Amrit Kaur in institutional and biographical records.
A word with a cluster of meanings
Rekhta’s dictionary entry presents amrit with meanings associated with nectar, ambrosia and the elixir of life. Its surrounding entries also distinguish forms such as amrit-ras and amritaa. This lexical cluster helps explain a word’s semantic associations, but a dictionary definition is not itself a record of a family deciding what a child’s name should mean.[1]
The distinction is useful when reading English spellings. Amrit in a person’s recorded name is not automatically interchangeable with every related dictionary form or every longer compound. This entry retains the spelling of its documentary examples rather than using a lexical resemblance to merge different people. The dictionary provides vocabulary evidence; it does not establish personal intention.[1]
Amrit Kaur in institutional history
A 2016 Press Information Bureau feature about Rajkumari Amrit Kaur identifies her connection with Kapurthala and describes her work as president of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences. Its account of the first governing-body meeting in 1957 supplies a concrete setting in which the full name was used in public institutional life. Here that is evidence of a Punjab-connected bearer, not a claim that the name originated with her.[2]
The same feature follows committee work, administration and the construction of a medical institution. It shows why an archive search for Amrit may need the complete name and an institution or date. The ordinary dictionary word alone would retrieve a much wider field of material than a search for Amrit Kaur and the AIIMS governing body.[2]
Connection is not birthplace
The Constitution of India research project places Amrit Kaur’s early life in a Kapurthala-family context while identifying her birthplace as Lucknow. It is an example of a public name moving through more than one geographical setting. A precise name entry can preserve that Punjab connection without altering the birthplace or assuming that everyone with the same name shares one origin story. Its constitution-making account identifies representation from the Central Provinces and Berar, further showing that family connection and institutional jurisdiction need separate fields.[3]
