Anand as a surname and personal name

Anand appears both as a personal name and as a family name in South Asian records. The Dictionary of American Family Names connects one use to a Sanskrit word meaning joy and separately describes a Punjabi clan name. It also records an English use with a different history. The form a name takes in a document can depend on local naming practice and on how an official recorded it; it should not automatically be assumed to be a hereditary surname. A shared spelling alone does not establish kinship or tell us someone’s religion, caste, language or place of origin.[1]

Mulk Raj Anand and writing in English

The Library of Congress identifies Mulk Raj Anand as an English-language writer born in Peshawar in 1905. Its literary recordings project lists extracts from his novels Untouchable and Coolie, first published in the 1930s, and discusses his involvement in the Progressive Writers Association. The profile describes his concern with inequality under colonial rule and within Indian society. This is a record of one writer’s career, not an account of every Anand family. The listed recordings and catalogue entries offer another route into his published work alongside the library’s interpretation of his place in literary history.[2]

In 2026 the Library announced a new digital collection for the recordings project. Its collection page returned an access challenge during our check, and the recordings were not independently auditioned.[4]

Reading a novel and its reception

A Cambridge University Press article discusses Untouchable as a work through which to teach questions of colonialism, nationalism and caste. The novel is literature: it represents social experience through characters and narrative, rather than supplying a census or a family history. Reading criticism alongside the novel helps distinguish the author’s portrayal from a later scholar’s interpretation. For someone investigating an Anand family, a famous author’s name is only a possible lead. Specific connections must be tested using full names, dates, places and documents such as certificates, correspondence or oral histories, rather than presumed from a shared name.[3]
