Evidence record · given name
Meaning and use are separate questions.
Lexical evidence: A dictionary-based meaning for the complete personal name has not been established here.
Documented use: Balbir appears in multiple hockey players’ names and in the name of a Mohali stadium.
A full name and a distinguishing label
The International Hockey Federation’s obituary dated 25 May 2020 calls the triple Olympic champion Balbir Singh Sr. It records his death in Chandigarh and identifies the gold-medal teams of 1948, 1952 and 1956. In the same article, the federation president uses the longer form Balbir Singh Dosanjh. These are explicitly connected forms within one institutional record.[1]
The article gives the name a concrete sporting context, including five goals in the 1952 Olympic final and captaincy in 1956. Sr helps identify the player within that context; it should not be promoted into a universal expansion of Balbir. The obituary offers no explanation of the name’s lexical construction or his parents’ intention.[1]
More than one Balbir Singh
Hockey India’s historical rosters make the identification problem particularly clear. The Olympic lists preserve Balbir Singh Sr, while the 1966 Asian Games roster lists Balbir Singh three times, distinguished by the affiliation labels Services, Pb and Rly. A reader who searches only the two-word form could therefore merge separate teammates into a single sporting life.[2]
Those labels belong to the federation’s roster, so they should be retained when identifying an occurrence. They are evidence of how this source distinguishes people, rather than a reason to invent a different spelling or meaning for Balbir.[2]
A personal name in a Mohali venue
A Hockey India notice published by FIH on 20 October 2026 names the Olympian Balbir Singh Senior International Hockey Stadium in Mohali as a venue for the Asian Champions Trophy Punjab tournament. Here Senior is written out within the stadium’s full public name. It is a dated example of the player’s name being carried into an institutional setting.[3]
The venue name is useful documentary evidence even without reproducing match schedules or claims about future results. Together the records show a player’s shorter form, a longer full name, roster distinctions and a commemorative place name. They establish actual usage while leaving the complete name’s meaning unestablished.[3]
