Evidence record · given name

Meaning and use are separate questions.

Lexical evidence: A dictionary-based meaning for the complete personal name has not been established here.

Documented use: Balraj Sahni appears in restoration credits, a centenary programme and a Punjabi literary-seminar publication record.

The name in a restored film record

Film Heritage Foundation’s account of the restoration of Do Bigha Zamin lists Balraj Sahni in the cast and identifies his role as the farmer Shambhu. The distinction between performer and character matters: Shambhu is the role in the film, while Balraj Sahni is the personal name under which the actor is credited by the preservation institution.[1]

The foundation describes a restoration involving Criterion, Janus Films, the National Film Archive of India and material preserved by the British Film Institute. The credited name therefore remains part of the film’s modern documentary history as well as discussion of its 1953 production. This entry uses the restoration record, without claiming to have inspected original opening titles.[1]

A full name used for remembrance

India Habitat Centre’s annual report describes a centenary tribute retrospective for Balraj Sahni, giving his life dates as 1913–1973. Its festival programme records discussions, readings and reminiscences with family members and other participants on 11 May. This attaches the full name to a particular act of cultural remembrance rather than to an undated fame list.[2]

The programme places films including Pavitra Paapi and Do Bigha Zamin within the retrospective. It is evidence of how the institution organised Sahni’s remembered work. A centenary heading establishes whom the event commemorated; it does not establish what Balraj literally means or why the name was chosen.[2]

A Punjabi publication with a spelling detail

Sahitya Akademi’s catalogue lists Balraj Sahani Da Rachna Sansar as a Punjabi collection of papers from a national seminar held in Mumbai on 28–29 September 2013. It credits Amarjeet Ghumman as editor and gives an ISBN and a length of 115 pages. This documents the name within a Punjabi literary publication, alongside the film records.[3]

The catalogue spells the surname Sahani in its title but Sahni in its description of the centenary subject. That local variation is reported accurately here; the book’s unseen contents are not used as evidence of a complete-name etymology.[3]
