The surname and its uses

Bhatti is a surname found in Punjab and beyond. The Dictionary of American Family Names describes Muslim Rajput and Sikh uses and proposes an association with an ancestral name. Its account is a reference-work interpretation, not proof of a particular family’s descent. Bhatti is also found in names associated with literature and oral traditions. Neither a surname nor a community label can establish an individual’s religion, social identity or relationship to another person. Researchers should compare the places, dates and names of relatives recorded in documents and family accounts before claiming a connection between different bearers.[1]

Dulla Bhatti in oral tradition

Dulla Bhatti is a figure in Punjabi folk narratives. A study of Punjabi folk songs by Armeen Kaur Ahuja discusses stories in which he appears as a challenger of Mughal authority and as a figure of generosity. These are descriptions and interpretations of oral traditions, not independent proof of every event the stories recount. Versions of a folk story can differ with singer, audience and setting; it is useful to identify the version before treating its details as historical fact.[2]

Pooja Sharma compares resistance in Punjabi and Sindhi narratives, including Dulla Bhatti.[3]

A modern Punjabi poet

Nasreen Anjum Bhatti was a Punjabi and Urdu poet. A South Asia Multidisciplinary Academic Journal study analyses her writing in relation to the story of Hir and the figure of Bhaag Bhari, paying attention to how a woman poet reworks a literary tradition associated with male authors. A National Endowment for the Arts grant listing also identifies a project to translate poetry by Bhatti and Sara Shagufta. The poet is a separate historical person from the character remembered in the Dulla Bhatti narratives; their shared name does not establish kinship. Readers can follow the sources to explore distinct poetic and performance traditions.[4][5]
