A surname and its limits

Chahal is a surname used in Punjabi communities. The Dictionary of American Family Names, reproduced by Ancestry, associates one Punjabi Sikh use with a Jat clan but gives no settled etymology. That is an account of a surname, not proof of a person’s family connections, caste, religion or language. A shared spelling may occur in different households and circumstances. Family histories can combine names, oral accounts and documents, but each connection needs to be assessed in its own context. A dictionary entry should be a starting point for research rather than a substitute for records about particular people.[1]

A novelist in Canada

The Dhahan Prize profiles Harkirat Kaur Chahal as a Punjabi writer and former teacher whose family moved to Canada. It lists a short-story collection, novels and an autobiography, and notes that her novel Aadam-Grehan was transliterated into Shahmukhi and translated into Hindi. These are distinct processes: transliteration changes writing systems, while translation renders a text in another language. The prize profile provides a dated literary snapshot, not a complete account of her work. It illustrates how one bearer of the surname appears in Punjabi publishing across borders.[2]

An oral-history record

A University of British Columbia Punjabi oral-history project profiles Amarjit Chahal, who moved to Canada in 1968 and worked in sawmills and as a driver while continuing to write. Its interview introduction names two of his books, Oot and Bahro Aya Admi, and invites viewers to hear his experience of Punjabi in Canada. Amarjit Chahal and Harkirat Kaur Chahal are separate people; their shared surname does not establish kinship. The project records an individual’s account, while the prize profile and dictionary serve different purposes. Together they suggest places to continue reading, not a single lineage.[3]
