Evidence record · given name
Meaning and use are separate questions.
Lexical evidence: The dictionaries record lamp and island-related senses under dīp, with Platts distinguishing their Sanskrit derivations. A particular personal name’s intended sense remains unestablished.
Documented use: McGill’s record uses both H. Deep Saini and Deep Saini for the same university leader.
A Punjabi headword with several senses
Bhai Maya Singh’s Punjabi dictionary records díp as a lamp and also as an island, continent or region. Its entry includes an expression for a row of lamps or illumination. This is a historical lexical record with more than one sense, rather than evidence that a personal name Deep must always be translated through light.[1]
The geographical part also reflects an older account of the world divided into regions or islands. It belongs to the dictionary’s historical description; it should not be presented as modern geographical classification or as a literal map concealed in someone’s name.[1]
A second dictionary distinguishes the derivations
Platts gives separate entries for the island-related dīp and the lamp-related dīpa, with dīp as a vernacular form of the latter. The island entry points to Sanskrit dvīpa. This helps explain why an ordinary English rendering can conceal distinctions: a similar written personal form does not automatically select one lexical history over another.[2]
The light entry also records compounds concerning flames, wicks, lamp stands and illumination. These show a productive word family in the dictionary, not a list of compulsory meanings for personal names ending in or resembling Deep. The complete name and the bearer’s explanation still matter.[2]
Deep in a university’s public record
McGill’s 2023 historical profile is headed President H. Deep Saini, while its opening calls him Deep Saini. It records his appointment in April 2023 and an earlier master’s degree in botany from Punjab Agricultural University, followed by doctoral study in Australia. These are explicit institutional and educational connections for a documented bearer.[3]
The heading and prose establish two public presentations on the same page. They do not expand the initial H., state whether Deep is a shortened form, or connect his naming to either dictionary sense. The university record therefore supplies usage while the dictionaries supply separate lexical evidence.[3]
