Evidence record · given name

Meaning and use are separate questions.

Lexical evidence: Nabha records sky, empty space and heaven among contextual senses; a bearer’s personal naming intention is unestablished.

Documented use: Gagan Kokri is recorded in the Punjabi-language film catalogues for Yaara Ve and Laatu.

A documented Punjabi word

Nabha’s 1930 Mahan Kosh records Gagan with sky as its opening sense and includes empty space and heaven among its further senses. The headword is marked as Sanskrit. This documents a lexical record in a Punjabi reference work; it does not establish when a particular family adopted Gagan or why.[1]

The same entry also collects numerical, poetic and religious applications. A passage using one of those senses needs to be read in its own setting. Listing them together does not give every application the status of a compulsory personal-name meaning.[1]

An adjacent compound involving flowers of the sky is explained as an impossible thing. Its figurative sense belongs to that longer expression. It should not be transferred to the given name simply because the expression contains the same sky word.[1]

Gagan Kokri in an official film record

The British Board of Film Classification lists Gagan Kokri among the cast of Yaara Ve. It identifies the production as a 2019 film, records a cinema classification dated 1 April 2019 and a release date of 5 April, and explicitly gives Punjabi as the language. The entry therefore supplies a particular public-name occurrence with a work, medium, language and date attached.[2]

The cast field is an actor credit. It is not the name of a character or a declaration of what the actor’s given name means. Preserving that distinction prevents a film’s fictional story from being mistaken for biographical or naming evidence.[2]

The spelling across another film catalogue

Netflix’s catalogue for Laatu, dated 2018 in the listing, also names Gagan Kokri among its principal performers and classifies the film within Punjabi-language movies. This independently documents the public spelling in another film setting. The record is a distribution catalogue, whereas the BBFC page records a classification decision. Their purposes differ, but both attach the same printed name to an identifiable work. Neither page explains the family’s original choice of Gagan.[3]
