Evidence record · given name
Meaning and use are separate questions.
Lexical evidence: A dictionary-based meaning for the complete personal name has not been established here.
Documented use: Recorded in Gurinder Chadha’s filmmaking and archive, and the separate Gurinder Singh Mann university announcement.
A filmmaker describes her perspective
In a 2017 BFI interview, filmmaker Gurinder Chadha identifies her perspective as both British and Punjabi while discussing Viceroy’s House. The account links the project with her interest in her family’s former home in Jhelum and with growing up in Southall and Ealing. These are reported statements about one bearer’s experience; the name Gurinder alone would not supply that personal history.[1]
The interview also situates the public name alongside films including Bhaji on the Beach and Bend It like Beckham. A named creator and identifiable works give the occurrence a cultural setting, rather than turning the person into a generic representative of everyone sharing the name.[1]
A personal name becomes an archive label
Jessica Boyall’s 2026 BFI account describes the Gurinder Chadha collection through production materials, scripts, storyboards, notes, correspondence, photographs and publicity. It also reports work on a digital archive and Chadha’s explanation that the material preserves a history of British Asian cinema. Here the public name identifies an archival collection as well as a filmmaker.[2]
The article shows how drafts and production records can preserve stages of creative work that do not appear in a finished film credit. The archive label consequently connects a name with a body of evidence, while the article remains a researcher’s account of that material rather than direct access to the papers themselves.[2]
A separate university name occurrence
A 1998 University of California, Santa Barbara announcement names Gurinder Singh Mann as the incoming recipient of its Kundan Kaur Kapany Chair in Sikh Studies. The notice describes a planned joint appointment and teaching on Sikh traditions and diaspora communities. This is a distinct scholar and institutional record. Retaining Singh Mann and the announcement’s date distinguishes this Gurinder from Chadha, without assuming a shared naming intention or deriving a complete compound meaning from their English spellings.[3]
