Evidence record · given name

Meaning and use are separate questions.

Lexical evidence: Platts identifies ḥusain as a diminutive of ḥasan, with senses connected to goodness and beauty, and explicitly as a proper name.

Documented use: Hussain occurs in Shah Hussain and Madho Lal Hussain in Lahore’s shrine description, and in a listed college name.

The vowel marks distinguish entries

Platts’s dictionary gives ḥusain its own entry and identifies it as a diminutive of ḥasan. It records senses connected with goodness and beauty and explicitly labels it a proper name, associated with the younger son of Ali. That is the relevant lexical evidence behind this entry’s discussion of Hussain.[1]

The same printed page records ḥasīn, a separately vocalised adjective. A shared unvocalised spelling does not make the two dictionary entries interchangeable. Keeping the transcribed vowels and entry labels visible is more accurate than treating every similar Roman spelling as an automatic alias. The dictionary supplies no basis for inferring a contemporary bearer’s religious practice from a name.[1]

Hussain inside a composite remembered name

Lahore’s official district portal uses Tomb of Madho Lal Hussain as a heading and identifies Shah Hussain as a sixteenth-century Punjabi Sufi poet associated with the kafi. The portal presents Madho Lal Hussain as a composite name recalling Hussain and Madho. This is an attributed institutional account of how the shrine’s remembered name is understood.[2]

The same account also uses Shah Hussain Faqir, placing additional titles around Hussain. For identification, the shorter and longer forms belong to that specific historical and commemorative setting. They do not mean that Madho Lal or Faqir should be attached to an unrelated person named Hussain. The portal is used for its stated forms, without adopting its unsupported genealogical assertions.[2]

The name in a public institution

Punjab’s Higher Education Department lists Govt. Shah Hussain Inter College in Township, Lahore. This supplies a different kind of documentary occurrence: the name is embedded in an institution’s directory entry rather than a personal biography. The listing establishes that written institutional form and location, but provides no foundation date or explanation identifying the circumstances of the college’s naming.[3]
