Evidence record · given name
Meaning and use are separate questions.
Lexical evidence: A dictionary-based meaning for the complete personal name has not been established here.
Documented use: Documented in the public name Jagjit Singh, including Jalandhar radio history and official postal commemoration.
A renaming story with a stated source
The Mumbai Legacy Project’s municipal biography reports that the singer known as Jagjit Singh was earlier called Jagmohan Singh Dhiman. It attributes the change to Jagjit to his father acting on a family guru’s instruction. The compilation cites Sathya Saran’s biography for this account. It therefore records a particular reported naming event, rather than a dictionary definition that applies to everyone called Jagjit.[1]
The same account places his early professional life at All India Radio in Jalandhar and later describes his musical partnership with Chitra Singh. Those details connect the public name with identifiable institutions and collaborators, without making the reported renaming story independently contemporary evidence.[1]
The municipal biography also names the collaborative album The Unforgettables. An album reference identifies a particular professional partnership more narrowly than a later celebratory claim about an entire musical legacy.[1]
The name on a commemorative stamp
A Prime Minister’s Office announcement issued on 9 February 2014 reports the previous day’s release of two commemorative postage stamps honouring Shri Jagjit Singh. Chitra Singh attended the ceremony. Here Shri is part of the announcement’s respectful form of address; the person being commemorated is credited as Jagjit Singh. The record is valuable as dated evidence of official public usage, long after the singer’s early career.[2]
A name attached to a musical legacy
Manmohan Singh’s speech at the ceremony uses Jagjit Singh throughout. It discusses the singer’s work across several musical settings, placing particular emphasis on ghazal and on the partnership with Chitra Singh. It also names the films Arth and Saath-Saath and the television productions Mirza Ghalib and Kahkashan. These are the speaker’s examples of a public career, not translations of the name. Read beside the municipal account, the speech illustrates how a reported adopted name became the stable credit under which an artist was remembered.[3]
