Evidence record · personal name

Meaning and use are separate questions.

Lexical evidence: Platts separates generosity, cabbage and action/work entries resembling Karam.

Documented use: Karam Singh in biographical, commemorative and official-list credits.

Separate entries, separate histories

Platts distinguishes Arabic-labelled karam, including generosity and kindness, from a Persian-labelled cabbage word. A separate Sanskrit-labelled entry gives karma, karm and karam senses concerning action, work and duty. Similar Roman spelling does not make these one word with a combined meaning. For a personal name, choosing among them would require evidence about that particular naming decision. The separate entries are useful precisely because they prevent an attractive gloss from becoming an assumed universal origin, moral character or destiny for everyone named Karam.[1]

A training biography’s Punjab location

The National Cadet Corps’ 2025 Common Subject book includes Karam Singh in a biographical heading. That heading gives Lance Naik and the abbreviations PVC, MM. Its early-life paragraph gives 1915 as his birth year and places Sehna in Barnala district, Punjab. This is a later institutional retelling, rather than an original birth register. The location identifies the biography’s village reference; it does not establish that the same administrative district existed at the time of the birth.[2]

A name in a commemorative announcement

A Prime Minister’s Office release dated 21 January 2023 lists Karam Singh among the Param Vir Chakra awardees in an announced island-naming programme. Its credit includes rank wording and MM. The release anticipated participation on 23 January. That announcement documents the commemorative use of the name, while leaving delivery of the ceremony and the identification of a particular island outside this evidence.[3]

A precisely printed service credit

The London Gazette’s page dated 18 May 1944 prints No. 22356, Sepoy Karam Singh, 11th Sikh Regiment, Indian Army. The number and regiment make this a precise documentary credit. However, this continuation page does not carry the relevant award heading. It cannot alone establish the award type or prove that its named serviceman is the subject of a later biography.[4]
