Evidence record · personal name

Meaning and use are separate questions.

Lexical evidence: Platts records kiraṇ/kiran as a ray or beam of light, also a tassel.

Documented use: Kiran KHAN in swimming results; Kiran Khan in a Lahore announcement.

Light and a material tassel sense

Platts prints kiraṇ alongside kiran, kiriṇ and kirin, with senses concerning a ray or beam of light, including sunbeam and moonbeam. The same entry also records a gold or silver tassel. These are distinct uses within one lexical record: a beam of light and an ornament are not interchangeable objects. Recording the material sense prevents a selective gloss from hiding the entry’s range. The personal spelling Kiran can be compared with this vocabulary, but the dictionary does not establish that a particular bearer’s family intended the light image.[1]

The name in selected swimming results

World Aquatics heads its athlete record Kiran KHAN, with PAK and swimming labels. Selected rows record 50-metre and 100-metre freestyle results at the 2012 short-course world championships, and a 50-metre freestyle result at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. The pool labels differ: the 2012 rows specify 25 metres, while the 2014 row specifies 50 metres. The selected dates are 15 December 2012 for both short-course rows and 25 July 2014 for the Commonwealth row. Keeping the dates, distance and pool context together identifies the particular results being cited. These rows document an exact sporting credit; they do not supply a birthplace, a current ranking or a reason for the athlete’s name.[2]

An announced Lahore acknowledgement

A Lahore report by APP on 6 March 2020 announced that the Pakistan Cricket Board would acknowledge Kiran Khan alongside Sarah Mahboob through Hamaray Heroes. It described a campaign in which fans nominated people before that year’s Pakistan Super League. This is a different documentary occasion from a swimming result: the name appears in a proposed public acknowledgement. The report’s future-facing wording is retained, without turning the announcement into proof that a ceremony occurred or treating its Lahore dateline as the athlete’s birthplace.[3]
