Name and possible connections
Malhotra is a surname found in Punjabi communities. The Dictionary of American Family Names, reproduced by Ancestry, describes it as an altered form of Mehrotra and identifies a Khatri context for the name. This is a reference work’s explanation, not a verified family tree for each person who bears it. Names travel and change in spelling, and the same surname does not demonstrate that two people are related. Nor can it reliably identify an individual’s religion or social background. Family documents and oral histories need to be considered in their own contexts.[1]
Researching gender and religion
Historian Anshu Malhotra’s university profile lists work on gender, caste and religious identity in colonial Punjab. It also records Piro and the Gulabdasis, a study of a nineteenth-century Punjabi woman poet and a religious community. These works offer readers ways into questions about gender, social hierarchy and religious belonging that are more precise than assumptions based on surnames. The profile is an institutional record of one scholar’s interests and publications; it should be read as a dated record when checking her current position or bibliography.[2]
Another historian, another record
Karamjit Kaur Malhotra is a different historian whose Punjabi University profile lists The Eighteenth Century in Sikh History and the edited collection Punjab Revisited. Her work provides an entry into a different period and set of historical questions from the publications listed by Anshu Malhotra. Bibliographies and library catalogues help distinguish scholars who share a surname: compare full names, book titles, dates and institutional details before combining records. The fact that both historians publish about Punjab is not evidence of a family relationship between them or with any other Malhotra family. The university profiles identify publications and provide paths for further reading. The subjects of these books also demonstrate why a surname entry cannot stand in for the detailed historical research undertaken by their authors. Readers can consult the works themselves to assess their evidence and arguments.[3]
