A name and a title
Malik is used as a personal name, title and surname in several places, including Punjab. The Dictionary of American Family Names links a South Asian usage to the Arabic word for king and describes its use as a status title for a leader. It also records unrelated European explanations for similar spellings. These are different histories, and a shared spelling does not demonstrate a common ancestor. The title’s historical meaning does not establish that an individual or their family held office. Nor can a surname alone determine a person’s religion, language, community or family relationship.[1]
Punjabi writing and broadcasting
The Dhahan Prize’s profile of Parveen Malik describes her as a Punjabi fiction writer and broadcaster in Lahore. It lists Punjabi short fiction, an Urdu novel and her autobiography Kasiyan da Pani, as well as radio and television work. SBS Punjabi later published an interview with Malik about the preservation of Punjabi. Together, the profile and interview show one writer working across literary and broadcast forms. The profile was prepared for a 2018 event, so any statements in it about current roles should be read as time-specific. Her career does not stand for every person named Malik.[2][3]
Researching Punjabi proverbs
A University of the Punjab journal article discusses a different writer and scholar, Shahbaz Malik, and his work collecting and interpreting Punjabi proverbs. Its abstract lists several collections, including So Sayane Ako Mat and Sade Akhan, and identifies his career in teaching and broadcasting. Proverbs can preserve linguistic and social knowledge, but a collection also reflects the collector’s choices and the contexts in which sayings were recorded. Shahbaz Malik and Parveen Malik share a surname; these sources do not establish a family relationship between them. Full names and publication details help distinguish their works in catalogues.[4]
