Evidence record · given name
Meaning and use are separate questions.
Lexical evidence: A dictionary-based meaning for the complete personal name has not been established here.
Documented use: Recorded in institutional accounts of Lady Mary Kinnaird in Lahore and Dame Edith Mary Brown in Ludhiana.
A cross-language proper-name record
Platts’s 1884 dictionary prints the Roman forms maryam and mariyam and glosses the entry with the proper name Mary. It also identifies the Virgin Mary and records an ironic expression comparing a delicate woman with a Mary made of wax. A proper name can thus appear both as a person’s designation and within a figurative expression. The entry documents those historical uses; it does not give a literal English meaning for every Mary.[1]
Mary Kinnaird in a Lahore college’s history
Pakistan’s Higher Education Commission identifies Lady Mary Kinnaird as the person from whom Kinnaird College’s name comes. Its account describes the Kinnaird family’s financial support for women’s education and explains that the college developed in 1913 from an existing high school. Mary is preserved within the name of a particular historical supporter, while Kinnaird is the element carried into the institution’s public title.[2]
The same institutional account records the college’s move to its present Lahore location in 1938. These dates distinguish the development of a school and college from the life of the woman commemorated. They provide a specific Punjab setting for the recorded name, without making Mary an exclusively Punjabi name.[2]
Edith Mary Brown in Ludhiana’s institutional memory
Christian Dental College in Ludhiana names Dame Edith Mary Brown in its account of the Christian Medical College Ludhiana Society’s foundation in 1894. Here Mary occurs between Edith and Brown in the published personal-name form. It should be preserved in that position when citing this institutional record, rather than silently reducing the person to an unrelated Mary Brown.[3]
The dental college itself was established in 1992. Its page distinguishes its own later educational work from the society’s earlier foundation. Reading those institutional relationships carefully keeps a documented personal name attached to the right historical role and prevents two different foundation stories from being collapsed together.[3]
