Meaning and use
Masih is a personal name and surname with uses in several communities. The Dictionary of American Family Names connects it to the Arabic word for Messiah and records Muslim and Christian uses. A name’s meaning in a language does not by itself tell a reader everything about an individual’s faith or ancestry. In Punjab, Masih is also used by Christians, but not every Punjabi Christian uses it, and people who share the name should not be assumed to be related. The spelling and role of a name can vary between family, church and official records.[1][2]
Names, identity and stigma
A Herald investigation into Punjabi Christian history discusses the adoption of Masih and Masihi by some people in response to the stigma associated with earlier labels. It connects naming to experiences of caste discrimination and the ways official classifications can shape social identity. This is an account of a particular historical process, not a claim that all Christians have the same background or name. The report also records disagreement over the terms. Listening to how people identify themselves and examining the setting in which a label was applied are essential when working with both historical and present-day records.[2]
Work and unequal opportunity
A 2025 Amnesty International report examines discrimination against sanitation workers in Pakistan and discusses the over-representation of Christians in some sanitation jobs. The organisation explains the limits of available employment data and presents the experiences of workers it consulted. Its findings concern unequal opportunities and stigma; they should never be used to infer an individual Masih family’s occupation. A surname may offer a lead for research, but a person’s own account and specific evidence matter. The report and the Herald investigation offer different ways to study the relationship between names, social classification and discrimination.[3]
