A published interpretation

A user-submitted entry in Behind the Name connects Nimrat with the Punjabi word nimratā, associated with humility, and gives the Gurmukhi form ਨਿਮਰਤ. A separate Sikh educational source explains nimratā as humility. The dictionary entry is a contributor’s interpretation of the name, not evidence of why a particular family chose it. Roman spellings do not always show every feature of pronunciation, and similar spellings may be used differently by individuals. Ask a person how they write and pronounce their own name rather than assuming a single form fits every family or community. The contributor also connects nimratā to Sanskrit namratā.[1][4]

A Punjabi film credit

A cast listing for the 2017 Punjabi film Lahoriye credits Nimrat Khaira as Harleen Kaur. The listing identifies a professional credit, not the history of the performer’s family name or a general measure of the name’s popularity. The film has an ensemble cast and a director, writers, musicians and other contributors whose work is also documented in the catalogue. A name in a film credit is evidence of how an individual was identified in that production. It does not establish that a similarly named person in another record is the same individual.[2]

A university record

A Panjab University research-scholars list includes Nimrat Sangha in a row for the Department of Gandhian and Peace Studies, with a registration date in January 2025. The page records the information shown in that roster; it is not a biography or a guarantee of present status. The name appears in a different educational setting from the film credit above. Both are examples of documented use, not a representative sample of Punjabis named Nimrat. A shared given name cannot tell us a person’s beliefs, ancestry, first language or reason for choosing that spelling.[3]
