Noon in Punjabi historical records

Noon is found as a family name in Punjabi historical records. A study of regional politics associates Feroz Khan Noon with a politically influential Noon family in the Bhalwal area of Sargodha. That identifies one historical family in a particular place; it does not establish the ancestry of everyone called Noon. A familiar spelling can also appear in unrelated naming traditions. A surname alone cannot determine faith, community or kinship. For a specific family, local records and the names and dates of relatives are needed before links to a historical figure can be tested.[1]

A Punjab chief minister

The Punjab Assembly’s published list of parliamentarians records Malik Muhammad Feroz Khan Noon as chief minister from 3 April 1953 to 21 May 1955. The record locates his office in the provincial government after the creation of Pakistan. It is useful evidence for dates and formal roles, although a list of officeholders cannot explain all the political debates of the period. It also records his constituency in the assembly. Readers interested in his political career can compare the assembly’s official chronology with scholarly histories and contemporary reporting, bearing in mind that each source was created for a different purpose.[2]

A name used beyond Punjab

The Dictionary of American Family Names separately records Irish, English and Scottish uses of Noon, with several proposed derivations. Its entry illustrates why a name that looks identical in English may have different linguistic histories. It does not explain every Punjabi use of Noon and should not be used to assign an Irish or British origin to a particular Punjabi family. Conversely, a person called Noon elsewhere should not automatically be linked to the Punjabi politician. Where a family has moved across borders, identify the places, languages and personal relationships in each record before deciding which documents concern the same family.[3]
