An interpretation of the name

A user-submitted entry collected by Behind the Name gives ਪ੍ਰਭਜੋਤ as a Gurmukhi form of Prabhjot. The contributor relates its elements to a word for lord and a word for light. This is a published interpretation, rather than evidence that every family had the same meaning in mind. Spellings in Roman letters can represent names across scripts, and individuals may choose different forms. When addressing someone, follow their own spelling and pronunciation. The examples here record particular people and should not be taken as a measure of how common the name is.[1]

A Punjabi poet

The Sahitya Akademi’s Punjabi register lists poet Prabhjot Kaur’s Pabbi for its 1964 poetry award.[6]

The Tribune’s obituary describes her love poems and short stories, and notes translations into languages including French and Persian. The obituary reports her nomination to the Punjab Vidhan Parishad in 1966 and says she received a Padma Shri the following year. An obituary summarises a career from a particular editorial perspective and can be read alongside her poetry and other scholarship. It does not reveal why her family selected her given name. The report places her first poetry collection in the 1940s, amid the freedom struggle.[2]

The Akademi’s Sindhi catalogue also lists a translation of Pabbi by Prem Parkash, with a first edition dated 1995. This is a translation-edition date, separate from the 1964 award.[7]

A hockey player

The International Hockey Federation’s competition record lists Prabhjot Singh in India’s men’s team at the 2004 Athens Olympics and in the 2002 and 2010 World Cups. Indian Oil reported that he had represented Punjab at national level during his school days. These records concern a different person from the poet. The federation notes that its historical match data is incomplete, so the figures available in its database should not be assumed to cover every appearance in his career. The examples show the name in two fields without implying a relationship between their bearers.[4][5]
