A surname in context

Puri is used as a surname in Punjabi communities. The Dictionary of American Family Names records a Punjabi Khatri clan bearing the name; its entry should be read as a description of a named historical use, not a way to assign a caste, faith or family history to every person called Puri. A name may appear in different contexts and spellings. It also cannot establish whether people who share it are related. Research into a particular family is strongest when it starts with known relatives and places and compares dated documents with the accounts that family members preserve.[1]

Kailash Puri and Punjabi writing

A survey in the Journal of Sikh and Punjab Studies identifies Kailash Puri as a Punjabi writer who addressed subjects relating to sex, a field the author describes as difficult for a woman to enter. This scholarly account places her work among a wider discussion of women’s Punjabi writing. It raises questions about who could publish. A later scholarly interpretation is not identical to Puri’s own words, so readers interested in her outlook should consult her published work or first-person accounts where available.[2]

Another writer, another record

Neel Kamal Puri is a different author. Her published author feature lists The Patiala Quartet and Remember to Forget and describes her work teaching literature and journalism in Chandigarh. The feature provides publication and biographical details about one writer, while the journal survey discusses another writer in a different context. Their shared surname does not establish a relationship. When searching for a book, use the author’s full name, title and edition as well as the surname: library catalogues and publisher records can help distinguish similarly named people and trace how works have been reprinted. Her account lists later editions of both novels, useful when searching for a copy.[3]
