A surname and a reference entry
Randhawa is a surname appearing in Punjabi communities. The Dictionary of American Family Names, reproduced by Ancestry, connects a Punjabi Sikh usage with a Jat group and records the etymology as unexplained. Such an entry is a guide to a documented naming association, not a complete genealogy. A surname on its own does not establish the religion, caste, language or ancestry of a particular person, and shared spelling does not prove close family ties. Family memories, dated documents and personal identification can provide context that a short dictionary entry cannot.[1]
A writer and translator
A 2017 Dawn obituary describes Afzal Ahsan Randhawa as a Punjabi poet, novelist, playwright and short-story writer. It names his novel Diva Tay Darya and a poetry collection, and records Punjabi translations of works by Chinua Achebe and Gabriel García Márquez. The obituary is a retrospective account of one individual’s career, not evidence that all people named Randhawa share his background. Book titles and publication details allow a reader to find his work and judge it directly. An obituary’s praise should be understood in the context of remembrance. Dawn places his first novel’s publication in 1961. It names that novel Diva Tay Darya.[2]
Art, agriculture and a library
Punjab Agricultural University’s library information says Mohinder Singh Randhawa donated a personal collection for students and scholars working in fields including agriculture, botany, art and Punjabi culture. An Open Library author page lists works under M. S. Randhawa across subjects including painting and agriculture. This is a different person from Afzal Ahsan Randhawa; a common surname is not proof of a family relationship. The library record documents a collection and the catalogue helps locate books. Both are useful starting points for research into his work, but neither establishes the history of another family.[3][4]
