A name used across regions

Saini appears in naming in Punjab and other parts of northern India. The Dictionary of American Family Names, reproduced by Ancestry, lists uses in Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh and offers a historical interpretation of the name. A dictionary’s broad account is not proof of a specific family’s descent from an ancient place or community. Nor can a surname alone determine an individual’s faith, caste, language or relationships. Records may use different spellings over time. Family-specific research should compare full names, places and dates and respect how the people concerned describe their own identities.[1]

A scholar of Punjabi poetry

A Google Books catalogue record identifies Pritam Saini as the author of a 1996 book on the life and work of Punjabi poet Muhammad Buta Gujarati. The record lists the university’s Publication Bureau and gives details that help locate the edition. It tells readers what the book is about, not the complete biography or family lineage of its author. Searching by a full name and title is useful when several people share a surname. Reading the book itself is necessary to assess Saini’s interpretation of the poet and the evidence he used.[2]

Translation and literary study

Central University of Punjab lists Alpna Saini among the translators and editors of Critical Discourse in Punjabi, published in 2023. Its profile also lists Blood Flowers, a selection of Harbhajan Hundal’s poetry translated and edited with Rajesh Sharma. Alpna Saini and Pritam Saini are separate people; their shared surname does not establish kinship. These publication records show two uses of Saini in literary study and translation. They also illustrate how a university profile and a book catalogue provide different evidence from a dictionary entry about the name itself. The university lists the book among her publications.[3]
