A Punjabi surname

Sandhu is a surname used in Punjabi settings. The Dictionary of American Family Names entry reproduced by Ancestry connects it to the Sandhu or Sindhu Jat clan and also discusses the older geographical word Sindhu. This is a published account of a name, not a documented family tree for every person who bears it. Clan histories can combine records with traditions of descent; a shared Roman spelling cannot establish whether two people are related. It also cannot by itself establish someone’s language, religion or migration history. Names may be adopted, changed or recorded differently across generations.[1]

A short-story writer

The Dhahan Prize profile describes Waryam Singh Sandhu as a Punjabi author of short stories and non-fiction. It names his collection Chauthi Koot, which received the Sahitya Akademi Award for Punjabi in 2000, and notes that two stories were adapted into a film. It also records his work as a lecturer at Lyallpur Khalsa College in Jalandhar. This institutional biography describes one person’s public career. It does not demonstrate a relationship with everyone else named Sandhu or explain how every Sandhu family came to use the surname.[2]

Following a name in records

The Tribune interview notes that the author saw an early published name incorporating Sursingh, the village associated with his childhood. That example illustrates why a researcher should search variant forms and place references as well as a modern surname. An institutional biography, a newspaper interview and a family-names dictionary answer different questions: respectively a public career, a remembered experience and an interpretation of a name. For an individual family, dated civil records, local documents and relatives’ accounts should be compared before drawing a conclusion about ancestry. Similar spellings alone are a starting point for a question, not proof of descent.[3]
