A name in Punjabi records

Sekhon is a surname used in Punjabi communities. The Dictionary of American Family Names entry reproduced by Ancestry associates a Punjabi Sikh use with a Jat group. This is a short reference entry rather than a family genealogy, and it does not settle the history of a particular household. People who share a surname do not necessarily share a recent ancestor, language or religious affiliation. Spelling can vary between documents and scripts. To research a family, compare full names, locations and dates with original records and ask how family members understand and use their own names.[1]

A writer and scholar

A Central University of Punjab library catalogue lists A History of Punjabi Literature under Sant Singh Sekhon, with a 1996 Punjabi University publication record. A WorldCat entry also records an edition of his collected plays published by Punjabi University in 2017. The catalogue records help readers locate particular editions, including a work issued after the writer’s death; a publication date is not automatically a date of composition. They illustrate the surname in literary history but do not establish whether any other person called Sekhon is related to him. WorldCat identifies the edition as a Punjabi print book.[2][3]

Teaching, drama and translation

A University of Derby thesis on Punjabi Shakespeare translations discusses Sant Singh Sekhon’s work as an English literature teacher and identifies his translation of Macbeth in 1958. The study places that translation within a broader discussion of Punjabi theatre and the changing approaches to Shakespeare. This scholarly account supplies context for one part of Sekhon’s career, while the library records identify books and editions. Neither is a complete biography. Together they offer routes into drama, translation and literary criticism, without assigning a single experience or ancestry to other people who use the surname.[4]
