A surname and title

Shah appears as a personal name, title and surname in several South Asian contexts, including Punjab. The Dictionary of American Family Names records uses associated with the Persian royal title and a separate mercantile name history in western India. Similar English spellings therefore need not have the same origin. A title in a historical name should not automatically be interpreted as a modern hereditary surname. Nor does the spelling establish a person’s religion, ancestry or kinship with a poet or another family. Research should begin with the specific person and the language, place and date of each record.[1]

Shah Hussain of Lahore

Shah Hussain was a Punjabi Sufi poet associated with Lahore. Pakistan’s Department of Archaeology and Museums describes his shrine in Baghbanpura and associates him with the kafi form of Punjabi poetry. Here Shah is part of the historical name by which he is known; that does not establish a family connection with present-day people whose surname is Shah. The government heritage entry gives dates for his life, while other scholarship reports different dates. Such differences are a reason to identify the source of a chronology rather than assume that every biographical detail is settled.[2]

Devotional poetry

A study by Azra Waqar discusses the devotional character of Shah Hussain’s songs and considers their relationship to earlier traditions of spiritual poetry. It describes his poetic expression of longing for the divine. This is a scholarly reading of the poems, not a family history of all people called Shah. It offers a way to approach the literary work alongside the heritage record of the shrine. Readers can compare interpretations with the poems and performances themselves, while keeping distinct the poet’s historical name and a modern surname. The poems also have lives beyond written texts through singing and performance.[3]
