Name and Sikh history
Sodhi appears in Punjabi and Sikh historical sources. The Dictionary of American Family Names associates the name with a Khatri clan, gives a Sanskrit derivation and notes its association with Sikh Gurus. The Encyclopedia of Sikhism discusses several branches and places associated with Sodhi families. Such accounts concern particular historical lineages and traditions; they cannot establish that every person with the surname descends from a particular Guru. Nor can a name determine a present-day individual’s religion or social identity. Claims about one family require evidence about its own members, locations and relationships across generations.[1][2]
Kartarpur in the eighteenth century
The Encyclopedia of Sikhism’s entry for Vadbhag Singh Sodhi describes him as becoming the chief of Kartarpur after his father’s death in 1737. It discusses attacks on the town and its Sikh shrine during a period of conflict. This is a biographical account of a particular leader and locality, not a general history of all families called Sodhi. Its bibliography points readers towards earlier histories that can be consulted for evidence and interpretation. Kartarpur here is the town in the Jalandhar area; its name should not be assumed to identify every other place called Kartarpur.[3]
A different family seat
A study of the Sodhi family of Guru Har Sahai identifies that family with descendants of Prithi Chand and examines the Pothimala building associated with them. It is a distinct locality and family history from the Kartarpur entry. The study describes the building in relation to family tradition, and that distinction between tradition, surviving architecture and documentary proof should remain visible when reading it. A shared clan name cannot establish which branch, if any, an individual belongs to. Family papers, oral accounts and local archives may help, but should be compared carefully rather than combined solely on the basis of a surname.[4]
